After decades of falling behind Democrats when it came to recruiting and electing female candidates, Republicans started to make gains in 2020, when they elected a record number of women from their party to Congress and in gubernatorial races.
This year, they’re trying to get even more in local races and ahead of the 2022 midterms.
They still have a significant gap to make up with Democrats; 104 Democratic women currently serve in both chambers of Congress. Republicans have just 39.
As Republicans seek to retake the House of Representatives and the US Senate in 2022 while scoring as many governor’s mansions as they can, female candidates will play a significant role in those efforts. Several high profile national and state races will feature female Republican candidates. Among them; former Trump White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who is already a frontrunner for the Arkansas governor’s race.
Insider has compiled the most notable GOP candidates running for governor, House, or Senate in 2022 or who are on the party’s wishlist.
As it’s the early days of the 2022 cycle, many candidates have yet to announce and few endorsements have been made. Insider will occasionally update this list as new women enter the race.
