Roommates, just when we thought things were slowing down after the guilty verdict of Derek Chauvin, it seems as if things have continued to be heavy with unexpected news. Unfortunately, there was another police-related shooting with Ma’Khia Bryant in Ohio. There is news that former Dallas police officer Amber Guyger is headed to appeal her 10-year sentence for killing Botham Jean in 2018 next week. As we previously reported, Amber was found guilty of shooting and killing Botham after she got off the elevator on the wrong floor, walked into his apartment, and mistook him as an intruder.
According to reports from CBS DFW, Amber’s former Attorney Toby Shook advised she will be arguing in front of a three-judge panel that she made a mistake killing Botham and that her conviction should have been a lesser offense of criminally negligent homicide instead of murder. Amber has been trying to get this appeal since last August. At the time, her legal team issued a filing to the Fifth Court of Appeals presenting the same argument.
Many Roommates didn’t take the news of the appeal lightly. One commented,”10 years isn’t even enough. They better keep her right where she belongs.” Another commented, “Still don’t sit right with me when his brother hugged her, and the judge did as well. Kindness gets taken for weakness.” If you recall Brandt Jean, Botham’s brother faced backlash for openly embracing Amber after her sentencing. However, he was honored by the Institute for Law Enforcement Administration with the 2019 Ethical Courage Award in Plano, Texas. At the time Brandt addressed the backlash stating, “I never intended for the statement I made to the person that murdered my brother to receive such international recognition. To be honest, I struggled with it for a long time, as I struggled with accepting this award from this agency.”
Roommates, we will keep you updated on what happens next as the judges are expected to make their ruling after listening to arguments later.
