‘Our front three were a real handful’ – Millwall boss Rowett delighted at contribution from his attacking players

Gary Rowett praised the performance of his Millwall frontline in today’s 3-1 win over Birmingham City.

Tom Bradshaw scored for the second Championship match in a row for the first time since last December.

Benik Afobe’s name was chanted by the Cold Blow Lane end in the second half as he produced an impressive display. Jed Wallace – highlighted as a big threat pre-match by Blues manager Lee Bowyer – also caused plenty of problems

“Our front three looked a real handful,” said Lions boss Rowett. “Any ball down the side…we worked on trying to drag them into areas. I felt Jed would cause Sunjik some problems running off him and he did.

“Just that movement and interaction of the front three [impressed]. Benik was immense. His physicality. And he’s added that bit of work-rate and drive that we want to see from him.

“Bradders is in a really good run of form. It looks like he is playing with a little more freedom. Jed was excellent as well.

“We’ve got Sheyi waiting in the wings, he was unfortunate not to start, and Mason. We’ve got good options. But we’ve only got good options if people step up and start scoring goals. At the moment, touch wood, they have.”

Danny McNamara also claimed his first assist of the season. His cutback was finished with aplomb by George Evans.

The Lions right wing-back is set to get an extended run in the side with Ryan Leonard out for around three months due to an ankle injury.

Rowett said: “We’ve done quite a lot of work with Danny, different staff – Robbo has spent a lot of time after training. He’s a willing worker and a great lad. He just wants to get better and better. Sometimes you can get tense in those situation, rather than relax.

“What I liked about it is that he got free. He worked for the chance because he won a challenge and it broke for him. He’s just got his head up, waited and picked the right pass. It’s a fabulous finish by Evo.

“Danny will do that more and more as he plays. He’s a young player, like Billy. They are getting better and better each game.”
