City College Plymouth unveils plan for ambitious ‘journey of transformation’

One of Plymouth’s most popular colleges has revealed an ambitious new eight-part action plan to cement its position as the region’s learning destination of choice.

City College Plymouth has unveiled its new ‘Vision and Purpose’, which will lead the way as the College begins an ambitious journey of transformation.

With Plymouth and the UK as a whole facing the prospect of recovering from the Covid-19 pandemic, the College’s Executive believes it has never been more important to be on a clear pathway, which is being guided by the College’s Vision and Purpose to become the learning destination of choice.

City College Plymouth Chief Executive Jackie Grubb said: “It has been a huge team effort to get to this stage, with an array of students, staff and stakeholders contributing over the past two years.

“Now the College has eight clear pathways to follow as it looks to help the community to transform futures, secure the local economy, and have a positive impact on people’s health and wellbeing.”

So it’s no surprise that City College Plymouth is co-headline sponsor at this year’s Plymouth Live Business Awards.

Strategic actions

Utilising city and regional skills strategies, the College has developed eight strategic actions in order to support its vision:

  • Curriculum – build a vibrant and exciting curriculum that is distinctive, flexible and skills led
  • Developing people – empower staff and create a culture of trust based on the values of respect, integrity and ownership for all
  • Digital – become a leader in digital education to improve connectivity within the College and the wider community
  • Finance – maintain good financial health and improve it to reach outstanding in order to drive growth and partnerships
  • Health and wellbeing – become a key trainer of future health and social care workers, and improve the health and wellbeing of staff, students and beyond to lessen the demand for crucial services
  • Maritime, manufacturing, construction and the built environment – become a leader in delivering skills training for these key sectors
  • Estates and assets – use its space to carefully respond to development in education
  • Opportunities – support the region through collaboration with the civic and commercial sector.

City College Plymouth has been on the pathway towards a skills-led curriculum for a while

City College Plymouth has been on the pathway towards a skills-led curriculum for a while.

Jackie explained: “The relationships we share with employer partners continue to strengthen, but we are very aware that this is an ongoing process – a continual cycle of review and implementation.”

The College is also well on its way to implementing its digital strategic action after staff were required to begin rolling out plans in response to Covid-19 and being able to provide quality education to those students not permitted to attend onsite.

It has partnered with Google to support this digital offer and is investing heavily in staff training.

New Digital Village

But it’s not just students and staff who will benefit from this ambitious vision to overhaul the College’s approach to digital, but also the wider community.

Jackie said: “The first stage is the creation of a new Digital Village: an inspiring place for students, staff and the community to collaborate, share and learn, and will ultimately transform the digital culture of the College.

“Another commitment as part of this Strategic Intent is encouraging good mental health at the College and in the community, to promote resilience and self-esteem for the good of the local economy.”
