NI SMEs racked up £40M in exports last year through Amazon, says online retailer

Small and medium-sized business based in Northern Ireland selling through Amazon recorded more than £40 million of export sales last year, according to the online retailer.

In its own economic impact report, it said around 1,000 companies are based in the province as so-called ‘independent selling partners’.

Part of a UK wide analysis by the company, the report is designed to highlight the positive impact of the US giant and counter concerns it is draws trade away from local businesses.

The report said the retailer has invested over £80 million in Northern Ireland since first setting up in 2010. However, its headcount in the province is small, with the company creating just 40 jobs in that time..

Its economic impact report said Amazon investments have also led to the “production of goods and services that contributed an estimated £90 million to the region’s GDP since 2010”.

“Our new Amazon UK Economic Impact Hub shows our ongoing commitment and contribution to Northern Ireland at a local level for the first time,” said John Boumphrey, UK Country Manager, Amazon. “The region has been a fantastic home for us for many years, and we are excited by the opportunity to continue to invest, invent and have a positive impact in the local community.”

The report comes just weeks after news of a new base for the company in the centre of Northern Ireland.

Amazon said it is to open a new 7,000 square metre distribution warehouse in County Armagh by the end of this year.

Known as a delivery station, the Portadown site will create 20 new jobs and 100 driver “opportunities” and will be based in the Mahon Industrial Estate.

Amazon Logistics said its delivery stations “power the last mile of the order process” and help to speed up deliveries for customers in the Portadown area

Packages are shipped to a delivery station from neighbouring Amazon fulfilment and sortation centres, loaded into delivery vehicles and delivered to customers.
