Sale deal at Gwynedd regeneration site left empty for 21 years

The sale of land at a regeneration site in Gwynedd that has been empty for over 20 years has been agreed by Welsh Government.

Parc Bryn Cegin in Bangor was built in 2000 as a 90 acre industrial park but has so far failed to secure any tenants.

Back in 2015 Liberty Properties Developments Ltd were selected by the Welsh Government to create a 400-job cinema and restaurant scheme at the entrance to the site but this has been hit by problems in the chain restaurant sector and then the pandemic.

There have also been proposals for a £14m cheese plant.

Now Business Live has learnt that about a proposal for the development of new industrial units at the site.

Minister for the Economy Vaughan Gething has agreed to the sale of the Welsh Government’s interest in the freehold of a plot.

They have also agreed to award a property development grant to support the development of an industrial development scheme.

It is early days with the proposal and Welsh Government said more details will be released in due course.

A source said it would be “positive” news for the area. It is not known how much of the 90 acre site is included in the deal.

Arfon MS Sian Gwenllian and MP Hywel Williams have pressed for years for progress at the site.

Plaid MS Siân Gwenllian said: “I very much hope that the Government’s announcement is positive news for a business park that has scandalously laid empty for the past 20 years, but I eagerly await to see the details, and fully understand the practical reality and significance of what the Government has just announced. I have consistently pushed the Government for action.

“We need more high quality jobs in Gwynedd and Parc Bryn Cegin offers a perfect opportunity. I look forward to seeing if the Welsh Government has the political will.”
