Top US vegan chef in second London bid

ne of America’s best known celebrity vegan chefs is to have a second bid at cracking London after closing his first restaurant in the capital two years ago.

Matthew Kenney, described by Vogue magazine as the restaurateur who “made health food sexy”, is to launch his venue Adesse on the second floor of Selfridges on Oxford Street on November 1 at the start of World Vegan Month.

It is the latest high-profile opening in London since the end of lockdown that have included the long-delayed launch of meat chef Salt Bae’s restaurant Nusr-Et Steakhouse in Knightsbridge last week, and the DC comic-themed Park Row in Soho last month.

The 57-year-old plant and raw foot specialist, whose fans include A-listers such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Miley Cyrus and P Diddy, has more than 40 restaurants around the world.

They include celebrity magnet Plant Food + Wine in Venice California as well as outlets in Sydney, Kuwait and Costa Rica — but none currently in Europe. His first London venture, Essence Cuisine, in Shoreditch, shut in 2019 after only 18 months. However, the popularity of vegan cuisine in London has grown enormously since then.

Starters on the Adesse menu are likely to include jackfruit “crab cake” with smoked red pepper remoulade and beetroot carpaccio with yuzu kosho and poppy seed, while mains will feature kelp noodle cacio e pepe with snap peas, pea shoots and dehydrated black olives or spicy udon, togarashi, tempeh, bok choy, roasted cashew and radish.

Alex Gilmour, head of restaurants at Selfridges, said: “One of the best ways we can improve our health and the environment is to adopt a more plant-based diet.

“We’re delighted to introduce Matthew Kenney’s concept with its fresh take on plant-based dining and a menu that aligns with our values of offering more planet-friendly food.”
