Wine bar chain Vagabond chooses Birmingham for first launch outside capital

Wine bar chain Vagabond is opening its first venue outside the capital in Birmingham next month.

The company, which first launched in Fulham in 2010, currently has nine venues across London but has chosen Birmingham for its next site in a former restaurant building in the city’s business district.

The 4,000 sq ft bar will be capable of holding around 200 customers and serve more than 120 different wines from around the world as well as the company’s own English range made at its winery in London.

The wines will be available via self-dispensing machines which are controlled through a smartphone app and it will also serve other alcoholic drinks and food.

Fourteen new jobs have been created and the bar will open on October 22.

The West Midlands Tech Awards is back for 2021 and is now open for entries.

The event will be held at the ICC in Birmingham on Monday November 15 and will celebrate businesses and individuals across a broad range of categories including a new award for tech collaboration.

The building at 92-98 Colmore Row was home to Mexican restaurant chain Chilango but this closed last year.

In January, BusinessLive reported that London-based Japanese restaurant Robata was also eyeing the unit for only its second restaurant.

Vagabond’s managing director Matt Fleming, who grew up in Birmingham, said: “We’re seriously thrilled to be opening our newest bar in Birmingham.

“We’ve had our eyes on national – and international – expansion since before the pandemic and Birmingham has always been marked as our first non-London opening.
