Dessert Week on The Great British Bake Off saw the contestants make a pavlova, a sticky toffee pudding and the usual showstopper
Dessert Week wasn’t so sweet for The Great British Bake Off’s Maggie as she became the latest contestant to leave this year’s competition.
The 70-year-old retired midwife from Dorset suffered a number of blows which culminated with her showstopper cake collapsing before she presented it.
Week four of the hit Channel 4 show saw the hopeful bakers asked to make a pavlova sweet treat, sticky toffee puddings and – of course – the epic showstopper challenge.
Judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith requested that the group make a celebratory Jaconde multi-layered dessert.
A Joconde sponge is a decorative almond flavoured sponge cake made in layers, and is known as La Joconde in French and is named after the Mona Lisa.
Although Prue loved the colour of Maggie’s cake and said it “tastes like summer”, the fact that it had collapsed on one side simply couldn’t be ignored.
In a sweet letter to Bake Off fans, Maggie wrote: “Who would have thought that at my time of life I would have been picked to have the time of my life? After almost a year of ups and downs, successes and failures I will miss being a part of the GBBO team so much.
“I want to thank so many of you who were so kind and supportive via all your messages,” she continued.
Bake Off fans had already predicted that Maggie would be the one to go, and took to Twitter once the news was confirmed.
One person tweeted: “Bye Maggie you was my favourite. We will miss your smile. #Gbbo.”
Another posted: “Thank you Maggie for all your efforts, you have been lovely to watch xx #GBBO.”
A third joked: “Oh Maggie! I do feel sorry for you but also, sooooo funny! #GBBO.”
Someone else poked fun at the fact that many think Maggie looks similar to Prue and wrote: “Oh bless Prue 2. She was an absolute delight every week & her smiley face will be missed each week going forward #gbbo #maggie.”
But viewers were also delighted with the fact that Chigs was awarded this week’s Star Baker accolade.
The 40-year-old sales manager from Leicestershire certainly impressed Paul and Prue with all three of his bakes and the title was thoroughly deserved.
