Ronaldo’s record-breaking double ‘no surprise’ to Portugal boss

Cristiano Ronaldo is a “hero” who will boost his new Manchester United team-mates’ confidence and teach them lifelong lessons.

United this week confirmed the sensational signing of Ronaldo from Juventus, 12 years after he left the Premier League giants for Real Madrid.

The return of one of Old Trafford’s favourite sons is expected to significantly enhance the Red Devils’ title prospects, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side looking to challenge the likes of Man City, Liverpool and Chelsea.

Fans hope Ronaldo’s second coming will also help young attacking talents such as Mason Greenwood and Jadon Sancho to take their game to the next level.

And United’s current crop should be “should be thankful every day” for the 36-year-old’s presence, according to two of his former team-mates.

Twins Rafael and Fabio da Silva shared a room with Ronaldo for 18 months after he helped convince them to join the club, then under the watch of legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

And the brothers have opened up on how the Portuguese superstar inspired them and made them better players.

“He is my hero, the best,” Fabio told the Daily Mail. “He helped me a lot, saying: “Don’t worry, just play. Calm, cool. I will be here for you.

“That meant so much and, of course, his talent is something I’ve never seen in my life.

“I love him because he set a very big example for young boys like us. That is what he will do for the players this second time.

“The things I took from Cristiano are for life. The players about to play with him now at United should be thankful every day.”

Rafael echoed his brothers words, saying of Ronaldo: “He did extraordinary things and we gained our own confidence from that.”

The twins revealed that Ferguson used Ronaldo to help persuade them to join United after they had also received offers from Arsenal in 2005.

Rafael and Fabio Da Silva joined Manchester United aged 17 after a phone call from Cristiano Ronaldo

A phone call in their native Portuguese from the then emerging star convinced them to head to Manchester, where they both went on to become Premier League champions.

Now United fans will hope Ronaldo can have a similar galvanising effect on the club’s current stars managed by his former team-mate Solskjaer.

After he became football’s all-time top international goalscorer with a brace for Portugal against the Republic of Ireland in midweek, it is hoped Ronaldo will be able to make his second United debut at home to Newcastle next Saturday (September 11).

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner claimed three Premier League titles, the Champions League and the Club World Cup during his first spell at United before an £85million move to Madrid in 2009.
