First Dates’ Merlin ‘relieved’ with cancer diagnosis after months of worry

Channel 4 star Merlin Griffiths is remaining as optimistic as he possibly can and is ‘relieved’ to have finally been given an answer after his health began to deteriorate last year

First Dates’ Merlin Griffiths opens up about his bowel cancer

First Dates barman Merlin Griffiths was relieved when doctors told him he was battling cancer after months of worrying about his health.

The Channel 4 star, 46, was diagnosed with bowel cancer just six months ago and now faces months of treatment ahead.

Merlin has bravely insisted that he’s not going to allow his illness ‘get the better of him’ after doctors told him he now has a 75% chance of living beyond five years.

After he first started feeling pain in his abdomen last year, Merlin was convinced that it was simply something to do with the injury he sustained after he was in a car accident when he was in his early twenties.

However, after getting checked out by doctors, they found a 4.5cm Stage 3 tumour.

The reality TV personality is remaining as optimistic as he possibly can and is ‘relieved’ to have finally been given an answer after his health began to deteriorate last year.

Although he was ‘terrified’ by his diagnosis at Northampton General Hospital, Merlin was also relieved.

The Channel 4 star told The Sunday Mirror in an exclusive interview: “It was still pretty scary.

“When I saw my tumour on a screen I could see this big, alien-like fleshy constriction.

“The doctors said, ‘It looks like a malignant tumour’. I knew what that meant – it was still alive and growing.

“But I was also relieved,” he insisted.

“I’d spent three months telling doctors something’s wrong. No one could give me an answer until now.”

Despite his life-changing diagnosis, Merlin is determined to remain positive.

“I want to stack the decks in my favour, which means I’m going to remain broadly positive and resilient,”

Merlin has made the brave decision to tell the world about his illness before he appears on Stand Up to Cancer Live, next month.

The star is set on filming another First Dates this year, with strict Covid protocols and a room to shield in.

Merlin is now urging others with bowel concerns to go to the doctor right away.

“I’m not the type to normally, but I knew something wasn’t right. It’s easy, especially with embarrassing cancers, to brush it under the carpet.

“But we must all trust our instincts. If you are worrying about something, then get it checked.”
