Confirming the death of the toddler Kali Cook in Texas, Galveston county’s health officials said it was the first child-related death in the area.
A spokesperson said in a statement on Thursday: “Sadly today, Galveston County Health District confirms Galveston County’s first COVID-19 related death in a child.
“The young girl, age range 0-10 years, passed away on Sept. 7.
“This is the youngest COVID-19 related death the health district has reported and the first in someone 10 and younger.”
Speaking to the Daily News her grief-stricken mum, Karra Harwood, said the family regrets their decision not to get vaccinated against Covid.
She said: “I was one of the people that was anti [vaxx], I was against it. Now, I wish I never was.”
Detailing the tragedy she said the family had been in quarantine after Harwood tested positive for the virus on Monday.
She said she tried to say away from her little girl as she didn’t want her to catch the disease and added that she had no diagnosed immune disorders or other health conditions.
At about 2am on Tuesday she said her daughter had developed a fever so she gave her medicine for it.
Just a few hours later by 7am she had died in her sleep, the devastated mum said.
She told the outlet she was not vaccinated and said she regretted not getting the jab.
Karra has gone on to launch a fundraising campaign for her little girl where she paid tribute to her.
She wrote: “Our beautiful baby girl gained her wings this morning. Her heart was too pure for this cruel world and God decided he needed another beautiful angel on his side.
“We are all so broken and lost and just trying to figure out how we are gonna get threw this life without her light.
“Our family has Covid and is out of work due to it , so we are overly stressed and hurting. Anything will help and Kali would be so thankful to rest in comfort and wait to see us all again.”
The campaign has so far raised about £11,500 ($16,000) and can be accessed by visiting here.
