Labelle member and Lady Marmalade singer Sarah Dash dies aged 76

Patti LaBelle has paid tribute to her friend and Labelle co-founder Sarah Dash after the star died at the age of 76

Sarah Dash has died at the age of 76.

Sarah was best known for being co-founder of Labelle and the group’s other co-founder Patti LaBelle has led the tributes to her friend and her “talented soul.”

Patti, 77, said in a statement to Billboard: “We were just onstage together on Saturday [Sept. 18] and it was such a powerful and special moment.

“Sarah Dash was an awesomely talented, beautiful and loving soul who blessed my life and the lives of so many others in more ways than I can say. I could always count on her to have my back.

She continued: “That’s who Sarah was … a loyal friend and a voice for those who didn’t have one. She was a true giver, always serving and sharing her talent and time.”

Patti went on to say she was “heartbroken” but knew that the singer’s “spirit and all that she has given to the world live on”.

She ended the statement: “And I pray that her precious memory brings us peace and comfort. Rest in power my dear sister. I love you always!”

Sarah was born in 1945 in New Jersey. She relocated to Philadelphia in the mid-‘60s. and teamed up with Nona Hendryx, Patti LaBelle and Sundray Tucker to form The Ordettes.

After several name changes, the group – minus Sundray – began to get recognised in 1971 under the name Labelle.

They became known for their impressive vocals and funky wardrobe and their biggest hit came in the form of Lady Marmalade from their 1974 album Nightbird.
