When Maxwell Caulfield and his famous wife Juliet Mills, who is 18 years his senior, first started dating, critics thought their romance wouldn’t last but they proved they were stronger than ever and are still together now
Maxwell Caulfield is best known in the UK for his portrayal of Mark Wylde in Emmerdale.
And fans will also remember him for the heavy criticism surrounding his romance with actress Juliet Mills, who is 18 years his senior.
The pair met and got married when Maxwell was just 21-years-old, sparking many a headline at the time.
But now, decades on, the couple are happier than ever and are as strong together as they have always been.
The pair have acted alongside one another in a string of plays, but their off-screen love story is just as amazing.
The now couple met at an event, which Maxwell described as a “pinch me” moment.
“I was sat in Row E between Juliet and Natalie Wood,” he remembers.
“She’d been Maria in West Side Story and James Dean’s co-star in Rebel Without A Cause. It was a real ‘pinch me’ moment.”
It was love at first sight for both of them and they were “immediately attracted” to one another.
Asked if it was love at first sight, she told Weekend magazine : “I suppose so. We were instant friends, immediately attracted.
“I believe in reincarnation and I believe I’d known Maxwell in another life. It was like saying, ‘Oh hello, there you are.'”
Whilst Maxwell added: “It was a full-blown romance. There was a connection on a psychic level. It was instantaneous for us both.”
The world seemed fixated on the 18 year age gap between them but neither of them were “ever worried” about it.
“We were living in California and it didn’t make so much news over there,” she said.
“I never felt any negative reaction. We were in a euphoric state. We never worried about the age gap.”
The pair also starred together in a 2019 stage adaptation of The Lady Vanishes and they both love working with one another.
“I love it. We’ve been married 38 years now and in the theatre we’ve worked together half a dozen times,” she told British Theatre.
“We love working together, especially touring together, because it’s a great adventure going to different cities every week; packing everything up, getting into the car and off we go. It’s a real gift that Bill [Kenwright] has given us.”
Juliet is incredibly famous in her own right. The daughter of actor Sir John Mills and playwright Mary Hayley Bell, the 79-year-old actress has a string of acting credits to her name.
She was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actress for her role as Pamela Piggott in Avanti! and starred in The Rare Breed alongside the likes of James Stewart and Maureen O’Hara.
