Scotland’s six Covid ‘hotspots’ in past week – check cases in your area

Health officials have released the latest coronavirus data for every local authority area in Scotland.

In the week between October 3 and 9, Scotland recorded 17,295 new Covid infections – with a test positivity rate of 8.2%.

Stirling recorded the highest infection rate of any local authority over this period, with a seven-day positive rate of 490.0 per 100,000 population.

West Lothian, Dundee, Aberdeenshire, Fife and East Ayrshire all recorded rates of over 400.

Nicola Sturgeon said the number of cases remains ‘relatively high’

The Orkney Islands had the lowest infection rate over this period, with 71.4 per 100,000 population.

Earlier today, Scotland recorded 1,908 new cases of coronavirus over past 24 hours. The Scottish Government also announced that 27 people have died from the virus over this period.

Nicola Sturgeon last week confirmed that the remaining Covid restrictions on face coverings would remain in place, but recognised that the most recent uptick in cases is now falling.

Speaking in Holyrood, she told MSPs: “That decision reflects that the number of cases is continuing to fall and so our judgment is that there is no need to introduce any tighter restrictions.

“But, secondly, that the level of infection, though falling, remains relatively high and so we consider that it is prudent at this stage, as we approach winter, to keep in place the remaining mitigations, face coverings for example, for a further period.”
