Telly star Paul O’Grady given all-clear by doctors after heart health check

Paul O’Grady changed his life around and more or less quit the booze after a heart attack more than 20 years ago and he’s not been given a clear bill of health at his latest heart check up

Paul O’Grady is a TV favourite but behind the scenes his health scares are very real

Paul O’Grady – who is best known for his alter-ego persona drag queen Lily Savage – has told his doctor is ‘amazed he is still standing’ after a string of heart attacks.

The 66-year-old has told how his cardiologist has given him a ‘clear bill of health’ at his latest check up – something the TV star doesn’t take for granted.

After already changing his ways following his first heart attacks in 2002 he immediately set about making healthier life choices.

According to the Daily Star, he said after his most recent check up: “My cardiologist thought I should have a pacemaker, so he sent me to the specialist.

“I had the ECG and all that business – but the specialist said, ‘You don’t need the pacemaker. Whatever you’re doing, keep doing it.'”

According to the Express, he previously said: “I grew up overnight. It really did shake me and I’ve toed the line ever since.

“I’ve just sort of gone off booze. I didn’t even have a drink on my birthday last month. It’s not like the old days when I could neck ten pints of cider — now I’d be ill as a dog. The hangovers aren’t worth it.”

And the For The Love Of Dogs Presenter has told how even doctors have admitted he should have had a pace maker by now after suffering two subsequent heart attacks in 2006 and most recently in 2014.

The star is well aware of how precious life is having lost his former partner and close friend Brendan Murphy to cancer.

In his biography, the star opened up about his experience of depression saying at the time: “It couldn’t get any worse.

“I looked like someone who shouldn’t bother coming home from the cemetery. My hair was coming out in cobs and I’d lost two-and-a-half stone. I looked like a hunched-up old man.

“To watch someone you love – a healthy, eloquent man – unable to speak or walk is hideous.”

So for now at least, the comedy star is determined to carry on working which for him is doing what he loves.

With a brand new prime-time show Paul O’Grady’s Saturday Night Line Up… he’s back bringing his witty one-liners and Liverpudlian charm when greeting a host of big name celebs.
