Van de Beek may offer Cristiano Ronaldo alternative as Man Utd put on the clock

United’s interim manager Michael Carrick believes Van de Beek could play as a false nine, while Ralf Rangnick is set to implement methods to improve the team’s pressing.

Who is Ralf Rangnick? Man Utd’s interim boss in profile

Ralf Rangnick may not be in the dugout for Manchester United’s clash with Chelsea on Sunday, but it already feels as though he is having small impacts at the football club.

The 63-year-old’s stellar reputation for man management and tactical acumen will have a lot of the current squad on edge, especially given the manner in which they’ve underperformed for large parts of the campaign.

With that in mind, there will surely be a reaction from the Red Devils in the capital. However, with Raphael Varane injured and Harry Maguire suspended, it remains to be seen if that will be enough against the European champions.

Here are the latest United headlines ahead of a huge game and a fascinating new chapter for the Red Devils.

Van de Beek has been named as a potential alternative to Ronaldo to lead the line.

Carrick discusses potential Van de Beek change

One player who will be relishing the chance of a new start under a new regime is Donny van de Beek, as he was completely out of favour when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was at the helm.

One of the main issues for the Dutchman is the competition for places the club has in the attacking midfield areas, with the likes of Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba jostling for spots in the side.

But speaking at his pre-Chelsea press conference, current interim manager Michael Carrick suggested Van de Beek could play at the point of the attack.

“We’ve got ideas where we think Donny’s most suited but he’s so flexible and adaptable, with two or three positions,” he said.

“He even played as a false nine for Ajax in the Champions League when they ended up getting beaten by Tottenham.”

Rangnick will look to instil a high-intensity brand of football at Old Trafford and will try to prepare the players with a countdown clock at the training ground.

One of the key facets of the 63-year-old’s philosophy is winning the ball back from the opposition quickly and he will reportedly instil a timer that will encourage his players to be more tenacious in shutting the opposition down.

It will be intriguing to see how the squad, who were frequently asked to sit deep under Solskjaer, react to such a shift in style. All eyes will be on 36-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo for sure.

Who should start for Manchester United against Chelsea? Pick your XI below!

Owen concern for United against Chelsea

Former Manchester United forward Michael Owen thinks Manchester United will struggle against Chelsea on Sunday.

The Blues have been in excellent form as of late and produced arguably their best performance of the season in midweek, as they hammered Juventus 4-0 in the Champions League.

Given the Blues seem to be finding their stride and United have lurched from week to week in the Premier League, Chelsea are undoubtedly favourites. Owen said he thinks the Red Devils will struggle to contain the European champions.

“Chelsea were awesome against Juventus,” said Owen. “They’re defensively rock solid, something that you must be if you have aspirations of winning the title.

“I think Carrick will play the likes of Donny van de Beek and Jadon Sancho again here, but Chelsea, for me, are just too strong. I’m siding with the Blues to take all three points.”
