Woman who went missing while travelling ‘scuffled with fiancé’ before vanishing

Gabby Petito is also said to have told detectives she feared her partner Brian Laundrie would drive off and leave her behind “without a ride” while they were travelling around the US

Gabby Petito was last seen travelling in the Yellowstone area of Wyoming

A woman who went missing after travelling around the US “scuffled” with her fiancé and told police tension had built between the pair, say police records.

Gabby Petito is also said to have told detectives she feared her partner Brian Laundrie would drive off and leave her behind “without a ride”.

According to officers, domestic violence charges were considered against the woman, who was said to have been “struggling with her mental health”.

Gabby Petito, from New York, has not been seen since she left a hotel with her boyfriend Brian Laundrie, in Salt Lake City, Utah, on August 24.

She had been making a social media blog as she travelled around the United States with her fiancé before her disappearance.

Mr Laundrie finally broke his silence on Tuesday after releasing a statement through his legal team.

Through his lawyer he said he “understands a search has been organised in Wyoming” and called the disappearance an “extremely difficult time” for the family.

The New York Post reports that police documents allege that the feuding pair were told by officers to spend the night apart.

The report reads: “Both the male and the female reported they are in love and engaged to be married and desperately didn’t wish to see anyone charged with a crime.

“There were no significant injuries reported and both agreed that Gabbie [sic] suffers from serious anxiety, etc.”

During the incident on August 12 they said they had been traveling together for four or five months and the “emotional strain between them” had led to an “increased number of arguments.”

The outlet reports that police had responded to a report of a domestic disturbance about 4:30 p.m. near the Moonflower Community Cooperative in Moab, and went on to pull over the 2012 Ford Transit van the two were traveling in.

Police Officer Daniel Scott Robbins wrote: “I approached the vehicle and saw the only occupants being Gabrielle and Brian. Gabrielle, who was in the passenger east, was crying uncontrollably.

“At no point in my investigation did Gabrielle stop crying, breathing heavily, or compose a sentence without needing to wipe away tears, wipe her nose, or rub her knees with her hands.”

The report claims that after getting into an argument near a store ‘over a phone’ Gabby tried to slap her partner who locked her out of the van to create space between them.

Neither were said to have wanted to press charges after the incident and resolved to spend a night apart.

Gabby was reported missing by her mum Nichole Schmidt last Saturday and an investigation was started by Suffolk County Police Department.

Her and her partner had been sharing their trip, which began on July 2, on social media and were building up a following under the name “Nomadic Statik”.

She is described as 5ft 5in, with several tattoos, including one on her forearm reading “let it be.”
