After a frustrating first-half, where captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang missed a great chance, Arsenal improved after the break.
Simon Collings was at Emirates Stadium to see Arsenal in action…
Aaron Ramsdale – 7
Made a stunning save to deny Jonjo Shelvey in the first-half and was solid all game. Distribution excellent as always.
Takehiro Tomiyasu – 8 | Star man
One of the Japan international’s best games for Arsenal since he joined in the summer. Made a few great blocks in defence and claimed a lovely assist for Arsenal’s second goal.
Ben White – 7
Another good performance from the centre-back. Had plenty of the ball and used it fairly well. Dealt well with the physical Joelinton.
Gabriel – 7
Barely gave Callum Wilson a sniff all afternoon and seemed to relish the tussle with the striker. He is such a rock for Arsenal at the back.
Nuno Tavares – 8
Struggled in the first-half with some of his decision-making, but he improved dramatically after the break. Provided a good assist for the first goal.
Thomas Partey – 6
A fairly quiet game for the midfielder, who is struggling a little bit for form right now after being out injured. Played a couple of nice passes, but nothing to shout about.
Albert Sambi Lokonga – 8
The Belgian really struggled against Liverpool last week, but he responded excellently here. His passing range was expansive and he dictated the second-half.
Bukayo Saka – 8
Frustrating that he went off injured as this was one of his better games. Looked really sharp and had Matt Ritchie on toast. Took his goal well too.
Martin Odegaard – 6
Tried to influence the game from the No10 role, but he was starved of space as Newcastle sat deep. A couple of nice moments, though, and didn’t lose the ball much.
Emile Smith Rowe – 6
Has been in excellent form but was a little quiet today. Missed a great chance with a header that he would have been gutted not to score.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – 5
Wasn’t really in the game much, particularly in the first-half. Somehow missed a sitter from about two yards, which summed up his day.
Gabriel Martinelli (Saka, 64’) – 8
A great cameo performance from the youngster. Took his goal so well and looked a constant threat.
Alexandre Lacazette (Aubameyang, 74’) – 6
Had little time to make an impact but he was sharp. Went close with an effort after Martinelli played him in.
Mohamed Elneny (Partey, 85’) – N/A
Subs not used: Leno, Tierney, Holding, Pepe, Maitland-Niles, Nketiah.
