Giants’ Saquon Barkley to accept all endorsement money in Bitcoin

Saquon Barkley is going all-in on Bitcoin.

During an appearance on Wednesday’s episode of “The Best Business Show” run by cryptocurrency expert Anthony Pompilano, the Giants running back announced he will be accepting all marketing and endorsement payments in Bitcoin only.

“You see inflation and you see how high it is right now, and you learn that you can’t save your wealth,” Barkley said. “So that’s why I’ll be taking my marketing money in Bitcoin.

“That was my mind, that was my motto before coming into this league. Just live off my marketing money, and now that I see about inflation and learning so much about Bitcoin … I think it’s just a smart thing to do and the right thing to do to start taking my investment through Bitcoin and through Strike.”

The Strike app permits users to send and receive Bitcoin payments, though it is not yet available in New York. Barkley holds an array of sponsorship deals with the likes of Dunkin Donuts, Nike, Pepsi, Toyota, Visa and Hulu.

The 24-year-old Barkley’s announcement follows the Giants’ recent partnership with Grayscale Investments, a decision that made them the first NFL franchise to establish a cryptocurrency sponsorship.

Bitcoin, the world’s most popular cryptocurrency, has emerged as a hot topic throughout the NFL. Last year, then-Panthers tackle Russell Okung received half of his $13 million salary in bitcoin.

“It’s a conversation that starts with learning, and I’m still learning,” said Barkley, who is working back from an ACL injury that cost him nearly all of the 2020 season.

Barkley is set to make a total of $10 million this season with the Giants and can potentially become an unresricted free agent after the 2022 season.
