Ralf Rangnick confirmed as Manchester United interim manager

Manchester United host Arsenal on Thursday evening at Old Trafford but Michael Carrick will remain in charge of the Red Devils whilst new boss Ralf Rangnick awaits paperwork for his visa to be completed.

United will play their first game at Old Trafford since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked and the club sit down in eighth following their 1-1 draw with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

The Gunners had their 10-game unbeaten run brought to a halt by Liverpool 12 days ago but quickly returned to winning ways on Saturday with a 2-0 victory over Newcastle at the Emirates Stadium to remain 5th.

Mikel Arteta’s side sit outside the top four to West Ham on goal difference and a win here against an out-of-form United could see them leapfrog The Hammers if they better their result.

There are no fresh injury concerns for either side from the weekend, but one or two changes could be made by both managers in order to ensure all three points are collected in this heavyweight clash.

Team news

Michael Carrick has no fresh injury concerns after the clash with Chelsea on Sunday and will be able to welcome back Harry Maguire from the one match suspension he picked up during the game against Watford.

Luke Shaw (concussion) was left out of the squad at Stamford Bridge as he continues to be assessed but he could well return against Arsenal here, but Edinson Cavani (tendon), Raphael Varane (thigh) and Paul Pogba (thigh) will all remain out.

Cristiano Ronaldo surprisingly started on the bench on Sunday but it is expected that he will return to the starting lineup for this match, while Donny van de Beek could also be pushing for a return to the starting XI.

As for Mikel Arteta, he has just three injury concerns to deal with but he will be sweating over the fitness of Bukayo Saka, who was withdrawn against Newcastle on Saturday and will be assessed ahead of this game.

Otherwise, only Granit Xhaka (knee) and Sead Kolasinac (ankle) are in the treatment room, but both are facing lengthy spells on the sidelines as they recover from serious injuries.
