Who will get the Manchester United job?

Rio Ferdinand has taken aim at Manchester United’s board for their “reactive” managerial decisions as he questioned why no successor to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was lined up.

The Norwegian was sacked on Sunday after nearly three years at the helm.

Defeat at Watford proved to be the final straw after a run of results that included humiliating home losses to Liverpool and Manchester City.

Michael Carrick has taken charge in the short-term with the club announcing they want to appoint an interim manager before targeting someone in the summer.

That approach has been widely criticised with the club’s lack of forward planning a surprise given the trend of results this term.

Solskjaer was evidently under huge pressure but United stuck with him despite calls to do otherwise.

The international break, often a period in which managers face the chop, is an ideal time to source potential candidates – so United’s failings in that area have left Ferdinand questioning those at the top.

He said on his Vibe with Five channel: “All of a sudden, the game happens and we lose, and the club make a decision. It’s all reactive. Nothing is prepped. Even the management situation, surely you look at this before?

“You identify a certain candidate and know. It’s almost like, ‘oh, this result has happened, we’re going to sack Ole, now we look for someone to come and take charge. We’ll put an interim before the interim, and then we’ll look for a manager’

“It’s actually embarrassing. You’re just sitting there trying to protect the club, and you want to be positive, but I can’t.

“Surely there’s a candidate that should have been identified weeks ago because you could see what was coming?

“You see the club isn’t performing, you have a two-week international break. It’s the perfect time to start going round and identifying the next candidate.

“You can’t keep changing the conductor if you do nothing with the orchestra.”

Ed Woodward, who has been calling the shots for several years and handed Solskjaer a new deal in the summer, will leave his post at the end of the season, leaving yet more uncertainty within the club.

Mauricio Pochettino is among the leading candidates to take charge at Old Trafford, having been the favourite to take over back when Jose Mourinho was dismissed.

He is willing to leave PSG midseason to take the role should a compensation package be agreed.

Leicester City’s Brendan Rodgers is another man linked with the now vacant post whilst Ajax boss Erik ten Hag is another name touted.
