With the NBA draft and free agency approaching, the trade rumors are heating up, and it now sounds like Damian Lillard could be on the move.
According to Henry Abbott of TrueHoop.com, the Portland Trail Blazers superstar will request a trade in the coming days.
“Now a source close to Lillard says that in the days to come, he plans to request a trade,” Abbott writes. “If this is a surprise, you haven’t been paying attention. As an organization, the Blazers have been melting since their playoff exit. Coach Terry Stotts was cut loose. Sources say billionaire Jody Allen plans to sell the team. The Blazers are prominent in trade rumors.”
This latest report doesn’t necessarily come as a surprise after the Blazers were eliminated from the playoffs with another first-round exit to the Denver Nuggets. After the loss, Lillard posted a photo of himself on Instagram with a cryptic caption, the song lyrics, “How long should I stay dedicated? How long til opportunity meet preparation?”
The Athletic’s Shams Charania and Jason Quick reported last month that several NBA teams, including those in top markets, were “intensely monitoring” Lillard’s situation in Portland to look for an opening to make trade offers.
The Golden State Warriors are reportedly among the teams interested in Lillard. According to The Athletic’s Anthony Slater, Golden State has internally discussed the idea of making a move for the All-Star guard.
The Philadelphia 76ers and New York Knicks are also rumored to be among the teams interested in Lillard.
However, the Warriors could offer Portland arguably the best trade package for Lillard, including James Wiseman, plus the No. 7 and 14 picks in the 2021 NBA Draft. The team could also add Andrew Wiggins and future first-rounders to complete a trade.
The San Francisco Chronicle’s Connor Letourneau also reported recently that the Warriors “Plan A” is to package the Nos. 7 and 14 picks for a “starting-caliber player in his prime.” Lillard would undoubtedly fit the bill.
Still, there’s no telling where the superstar will end up. If Lillard is moved this summer, the New York Knicks have the best odds at landing him at +250, according to BetOnline.ag. The Philadelphia 76ers, Miami Heat, Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers and Boston Celtics are also among the teams with the best odds to land him.
