Oppo Find X4 Pro looks set to use Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 8 Gen-1 chipset

The first signs regarding what we can expect from Oppo’s next flagship phone for 2022 have started to emerge.

These include a move to the latest premium Snapdragon mobile processor and faster charging. Here’s all we know so far about the Oppo Find X4 Pro.

When will the Oppo Find X4 be released?

While there’s no official release date as such, at Qualcomm’s December 2021 Snapdragon Summit, Oppo confirmed that its next flagship device would come with chip maker’s newly-detailed Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC (making it one of the first to adopt the platform) and would be launched in the first quarter of 2022.

Considering the last two generations of Find X flagships arrived in March, it stands to reason that Oppo won’t change tack, leading us to assume we’ll see both the Find X4 and Find X4 Pro making their debut on March 2022.

How much will the Oppo Find X4 cost?

We don’t have any details on the cost of the Oppo Find X4 Pro (or the standard model, for that matter) at the time of writing, so we need to look to the previous entries to give us a clue. Here’s how the last couple of generations have lined up, although US prices are only approximate as Oppo doesn’t sell directly in that States:

As you can see, these are flagship devices and as such come with flagship prices. They’re still cheaper than the closest rivals – such as the Samsung S21 Ultra, which will set you back £1,149/€1,249/US$1,299.99 (based on its RRP), but it’s a fair wedge of cash you’ll have to hand over for a premium handset.

If Oppo holds to the pricing of previous models, then obviously you’ll have to save up £1,099/€1,149/US$1,465 if you want to buy one. There is a possibility of a slight increase though, with the global chip shortage and pandemic-related supply chain restraints seeing a creep in costs that are being handed on to the consumer.

What new features will we see in the Oppo Find X4 Pro?

Obviously, as we’ve outlined above, the biggest new addition will be the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset. This is a re-brand of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800-series chips that have served the high-end mobile market for years at this point.

Qualcomm is now spinning Snapdragon out into its own sub-brand and simplifying the naming system at the same time. So, you’ll no longer have names like “Snapdragon 888” or “870G”, but rather something along the lines of “Snapdragon 8 Gen 1”, “Gen 2” and so on.

Oppo’s Vice President for Overseas Sales announced that “we are committed to bringing top-of-the-range 5G smartphones to consumers, such as the Find X3 series, so we are delighted about the launch of the Snapdragon 8 Mobile Platform. Oppo maintains a close relationship with Qualcomm Technologies and we believe the new mobile platform will bring immense improvements and powerful performance to the next generation of flagship smartphones.”

Qualcomm has confirmed that the new 8 Gen 1 relies on a 4nm Samsung-based manufacturing process and will also bring additional capabilities in terms of AI and camera functionality.

You’ll also find these new processors in products across a wide range of rival manufacturers, with Xiaomi, OnePlus, Honor, Motorola and others already confirming their support of the new platform too. In fact, Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun stated that the “Xiaomi 12 will be the world’s first smartphone powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1,” adding later that it will be “available soon,” beating Oppo to the punch by getting its next flagship on the market before the end of 2021.

Other than the chipset, there’s not much we know about the rest of the specifications for the Oppo Find X4 Pro (or the base Find X4) at this stage. We have seen some reports – including one from GSMArena – suggesting that the camera resolution will remain the same as on 2021’s Find X3 Pro. This suggests a configuration with a 50Mp f/1.8 26mm main camera, a 50Mp f/2.2 16mm 110˚ ultrawide, a 13Mp f/2.4 52mm telephoto and a 3Mp f/3.0 microscope lens – albeit with tweaks to the sensors to improve performance.

Tipster Digital Chat Station claims that the battery fast-charging speeds will go up from the 65W – as found on the Find X3 Pro – to a more rapid 80W, which should mean you can go from 0% to 100% in a shorter period of time. This will no doubt impress in practice, as in our review of the Oppo Find X3 Pro we were able to fully recharge the device in just over 30 minutes. Hopefully, the X4 Pro will also retain the fast-wireless charging feature from its predecessor, as that was also pretty damn quick – fully recharging our test unit in 80 minutes.

DCS’ leak also points to a familiar 6.7in QHD+ AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, while the front camera should sport a 32Mp resolution.

The Oppo Find X3 Pro is already a mighty smartphone, so we’re excited about what the addition of a next-level chipset and whatever other improvements Oppo can whip up will do to the Find X4 and Find X4 Pro. Thankfully, it seems as though we’ll find out pretty soon.
