The Aston Villa shot-stopper was quick to rub Bruno Fernandes’ miss from the spot in the faces of the disappointed United fans sat behind him in the dramatic victory
Aston Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez has made no friends among the Old Trafford faithful after he was spotted celebrating Bruno Fernandes’ late penalty miss in their faces in what was a dramatic last five mins against Manchester United.
Dean Smith’s Villa side secured their first win against the Red Devils in 12 years after central defender Kortney Hause guided his header beyond David de Gea – prompting wild celebrations from the away end.
However, those celebrations were, albeit briefly, halted in their tracks when Mike Dean pointed to the penalty spot as Hause went from hero to zero in a matter of minutes after he was adjudged to have handled the ball inside the area.
Fernandes success rate from the penalty spot is well-documented, the former Sporting midfielder establishing himself as somewhat of a spot-kick specialist in his year and three-quarters at Man Utd – so the majority of those in attendance expected the net to bulge and the hosts to secure an underserved point late on.
Lady luck was looking down on the visitors however, as the Portugal international fired his effort high and wide, causing a relieved Martinez to divert his attention to the fans behind him.
The Argentine shot-stopper picked himself up off the floor after diving the right way and let out a fierce, fists-clenched celebratory roar at the United faithful.
Villa’s win was no smash and grab victory, Smith’s men undeniably the better of the two sides – showing no sign of fear against the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Fernandes and co.
The result has contrasting impacts on both sides as Villa rise to seventh in the table, while Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side drop from first to fourth – conceding vital ground in the title race.
The United boss was hardly graceful in defeat, bemoaning the fact Villa’s winner appeared offside as well as criticising the conduct of the Villa players.
“[We are] Obviously disappointed because the goal is offside. It’s unfortunate to have that decision against you.
“First of all the way they get round the penalty spot, get round Bruno and that, that’s not to my liking. Bruno is usually very good in those positions and unfortunately he missed this one.
“It doesn’t get in Bruno’s head. He’s strong mentally and he’ll step forward again. The decision (on who takes penalties) is made before the game.”
