Former AGT contestant Skilyr Hicks has died

Skilyr Hicks, who had previously appeared on America’s Got Talent, has died at the age of 23.

The singer-songwriter appeared on season eight of America’s Got Talent in 2013.

Her mother, Jodi, said her daughter passed away Monday after she had been found lifeless in the home of a friend in Liberty, South Carolina.

The cause of death is currently unknown.

Skilyr’s mum told TMZ that her daughter had been dealing with mental health issues, including depression and substance abuse.

She said that Skilyr was loved by her family and four siblings and had been using her music to help people in need.

She added that her daughter “will live on through her music”.

Skilyr impressed judges Mel B, Heidi Klum, Howie Mandel and Howard Stern enough to be voted through to the next stages.

She received four yes votes after singing an original song that she had penned.

Her touching back story landed her an extended segment on the show as she explained that she had lost her father a few years prior to the audition.

The youngster told the tape the her dad’s death was “a really difficult time for me” before saying music helped her to “let out all the emotion that was building inside”.

Hi his comments, Howard said her dad would be “glowing with pride” watching his daughter.

Skilyr also revealed how she had taught herself to play, write and sing.

Despite impressing the judges, Skilyr failed to make it to the live shows in New York City, but was still a hit on the show.

The artist was later arrested in 2018 for underage drinking and spent time in prison for reportedly attacking her family.

As news of her death circulated, fans took to Twitter to pay their respects.

One user explained how their “heart aches for her and her mother”.

Another wrote: “Rest in peace angel.”
