Gabriel’s Arsenal admission suggests brighter days lay ahead for Mikel Arteta

Gabriel Magalhaes says he has learned from a difficult first season with Arsenal and believes the future is bright at the Emirates under manager and “top guy” Mikel Arteta

Mikel Arteta laments Xhaka injury blow for Arsenal

Gabriel Magalhaes’ Arsenal admission suggests that brighter days lay ahead for Mikel Arteta at the Emirates.

The Gunners finished eighth in the Premier League last season, going without European football for the first time since 1995.

But Arteta and co have now won four successive matches in all competitions, topping their turnaround off with a 3-1 North London derby victory over Tottenham Hotspur last Sunday.

Gabriel is part of a young and blossoming back line, symptomatic of Arteta’s plans to refresh the Arsenal squad, and the 23-year-old has looked back on a “year of learning” following his £25 million transfer from Lille last summer.

“Of course, the team had a bad run, but I started well and overall I think it was a good year for me,” he told Sky Sport News ahead of the Gunners’ match away to Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday.

“I learned a lot of things and I’m a more mature player this year. I know the league better as well.”

Entrusted with marshalling the back line alongside £50 million man Ben White, Gabriel has praised his manager’s approach for not only making the decisions at the Emirates but his “very good” communication and willingness to consult with his players.

“He is a top guy who is always helping out his players and his staff,” the Brazilian said of Arteta. “He supports us during tough times and I’m very happy to be coached by him.

“Without doubt, I’m learning a lot from him. He helps us a lot on the pitch, in terms of deciding how we are set up and the systems we use. He guides us forward but he also asks us questions about what we think might be best for the team.

“The communication in general between the players and the manager is very good. We want to do well for him because that’s exactly what he deserves. We see that he enjoys what he does and we want to achieve great things together.”

He added: “I think we’re going to have a much better season. I really believe we can achieve a lot more this time around.”

Gabriel’s glowing praise of the group Arteta has crafted lends credence to Bukayo Saka’s trophy pledge following the win against Spurs.

The 20-year-old stated: “We can achieve anything, no matter what age. With age comes experience but we have a lot of experience in this squad anyway which helps us.

“We have a lot of quality and enough experience to achieve a lot. We’re going to take it game by game but if we play like this we have enough quality to win trophies.”

Saka also challenged his team-mates to replicate performances like the one Arsenal produced in the derby thrashing more often, saying: “If we play like that all the time, we have a strong chance of doing well this season and winning some trophies.

“This is one game, we have to do it again the next week and the next week,” the Gunners starlet affirmed.

“We get into a lot of good situations but we need to score more goals. Yesterday, we were a lot more clinical, so we’re happy with that but we’ve got to do it consistently.”
