Pascal Struijk has sent a message to Harvey Elliott after the Liverpool midfielder suffered a horror injury which left him needing surgery.

Liverpool confirmed Elliott had suffered a “serious ankle injury” following the second-half challenge from Struijk which saw the Leeds defender sent off.

Elliott had to be stretchered off the pitch with a suspected dislocated ankle during the Reds’ 3-0 win at Elland Road, and was taken to hospital but has since been discharged.

And Struijk has now sent the 18-year-old a message revealing his horror at the incident and wishing him a “speedy recovery”.

“In today’s game something happened that I would never wish on anyone,” Struijk posted on Instagram. “Harvey Elliott, my thoughts are with you. I’m gutted and never meant for this to happen.

“I wish you a speedy recovery and hope to see you back on the pitch soon.”

Elliott, who has impressed in Jurgen Klopp’s midfield this season, was breaking down the wing on a counter-attack before being chopped down from behind by Struijk in Sunday’s clash.

After he was discharged from hospital, Liverpool released a statement confirming the serious nature of his injury.

“Liverpool Football Club can confirm Harvey Elliott has been discharged from hospital after suffering a serious ankle injury in the game against Leeds United on Sunday,” the club posted on their official website.

“Elliott will be required to undergo surgery in the coming days and the club will offer a further update on his prognosis in due course.

“Harvey, his family and Liverpool FC would like to place on record their thanks to the paramedics and all the staff at Leeds General Infirmary for the care and treatment given.”

Elliott could go under the knife as soon as Tuesday, according to The Athletic.

The injury is heartbreaking so soon into what promised to be a breakout season for the teenager.

But big-hearted Elliott still found time to brighten the spirits of a young fan who was the same hospital bay by giving him his shirt and boot from the match.

In a WhatsApp screenshot posted on Twitter, the Dad of the young boy messaged a friend saying: “My son has just broke his arm at a footy game this afternoon. Who comes in on next bed to him… Harvey Elliott and his family.

“Gives him his LFC top from the game and his shoe. Son’s buzzing now.”

Liverpool outclassed Leeds in Sunday’s game, with Mohamed Salah opening the scoring with a tap-in before Fabinho and Sadio Mane netted in the second half.
