Mum bitterly regrets asking for advice over staycation she’s now ‘dreading’

A mum has been left ‘dreading’ a weekend at Southport Pontins with her four-year-old daughter after locals urged her to cancel and book other accommodation

The mum said she was ‘dreading’ the trip after hearing bad reviews

A mum has been left bitterly regretting asking for advice on what to do while on a UK Staycation, after locals warned her to stay elsewhere.

The woman booked a three-night stay at Pontins holiday park in Southport, Merseyside, so decided to take to a local Facebook group to ask for recommendations on what to do while in the area.

However, she has now been left dreading the staycation with her four-year-old daughter, after commenters suggested they look for alternate accommodation, according to the Liverpool Echo.

“We are coming to Southport Pontins on Friday (until Monday), and after reading the reviews I am dreading it slightly,” the mum wrote.

“Just wondering if there is anything people recommend to do while there, recommendations for a four-year-old if possible.”

Many locals suggested the woman try and get a refund if possible book a local hotel instead.

“From a health and hygiene perspective I’d try and cancel and book a Premier Inn or Travelodge,” one local said, while another suggested: “I would ask for a full refund and book somewhere else personally.”

Meanwhile, a third added: “I’d like to apologise in advance and let you know that Pontins does not represent Ainsdale in any way.”

Fortunately, though, others weren’t quite so doom and gloom, reassuring the woman that she and her daughter would still have a good time while visiting the area.

“Just view Pontins as your base – the rest of your holiday can still be enjoyable. The weather looks to be great and the sea front will be buzzing. There’s parks, the pier and Funland, bowling, cinema, Formby pinewoods – loads and loads to do and see,” one wrote, adding, “You can still have a really good time.”

“If you can look for the funny side in things you will have a ball,” another commented.

Over the last few years, the holiday park, located on Shore Road in Ainsdale, has received a string of negative reviews, leaving it with just a two out of possible five star rating on TripAdvisor.

Last month, Conservative MP Damien Moore said he received a call from a visitor to Southport who “will not be returning.”

Writing on his Facebook page, Mr Moore said: “The visitor had driven three hours with her family to stay at Pontins, but left after a day. I see and hear stories like this every day – whether through my office, via local media, or through conversations I have with people in our town.

“I am working hard to secure investment for Southport, fill our empty commercial units with great businesses, and attract visitors – all while making our town a better place to live.

“Britannia Hotels, the group which own Pontins, are tarnishing this work. I have raised this in Parliament, with select committees, and with Britannia directly.”

Britannia was approached for comment by the Echo but hadn’t responded by the time of publication.
