Strictly ‘fix row’ as Tom Fletcher axed by judges after ‘under marking’ claims

Strictly Come Dancing fans were furious as Tom Fletcher and Rhys Stephenson found themselves in the dance off, with the McFly singer sent home by the judges

Some Strictly Come Dancing viewers threatened they would stop watching the series on Sunday night, after a surprise elimination.

McFly singer Tom Fletcher was the latest star to be booted off the show alongside professional dance partner Amy Dowden.

Tom found himself in the bottom two alongside CBBC presenter Rhys Stephenson, and the pair and their partners had to perform again in the dance off.

After they received the fewest public votes, it was then up to the judges to decide who would stay on the show and who would leave.

It was a split decision too, as Head Judge Shirley Ballas voted to save Tom and Amy, while Motsi Mabuse, Anton Du Beke and guest judge Cynthia Erivo all voted to save Rhys and his dance partner Nancy Xu.

But fans hit out at the result, unsure how Tom was even in the bottom two – with many blaming the “undermarking” by the judges during Saturday night’s show.

The pair’s moving routine to the Les Misérables track On My Own did not impress the judges, with viewers at home baffled by the comments they received – as well as the “low scores”.

None of the judges said they felt the right emotion from the performance, while those tuning in at home, including past Strictly stars, were quick to suggest the judges were wrong.

On Sunday night, the low scores and lack of public votes meant Tom was vulnerable and at the mercy of the judges.

As they voted with a majority to send him home, Tom was gutted to be saying goodbye to the show.

He told host Tess Daly: “Honestly I’ve had the best time, I’ve loved every second of it. I’ve made the best friend in Amy, you’ve been amazing thank you so much for teaching me how to dance.

“I know it was a struggle at times. It’s an amazing show, everyone that works on it, all of you guys have been amazing, I’ve loved getting to know you.

“Thank you so much, it’s been the best experience and I don’t regret a single minute of it, so thank you everyone so much. I’m gutted to leave.”

He added of his three sons: “I hope they are proud. They’ve loved learning to dance. That’s the thing, Amy hasn’t just taught me, she’s taught my kids.”

Amy also shared her upset to be leaving, saying: “I really wasn’t ready for this. I’ve loved every single second from the bottom of my heart.

“Who gets to say they got to go on tour with McFly?! Tom has given his all, and he is so humble, so genuine, so talented. The whole Fletcher family, they welcomed me in with opened arms and honestly I couldn’t have wished for a better time.

“These memories are going to live with me for the rest of my life, and I’m telling you this now, the Fletchers are not getting rid of Amy.”

Tom responded: “Amy you’ve made it so amazing, so much fun. I thought I’d enjoy it but I didn’t think I’d enjoy it this much.

“This was the week I wanted to get to so I’m so glad that I got here. I’m so proud of the journey. So, thank you so much Amy.”

Viewers took to Twitter over the result, with one writing: “My blood is boiling at the #StrictlySpoiler. First time watching strictly in years and the decline in the voting of the judges is shocking. Never witnessed a show that is so blatant with how much of a fix it is.”

Another agreed: “I think strictly is fixed gutted with the #StrictlySpoiler,” as a third commented: “I’m so upset for Tom. Tom deserved more.”

Meanwhile a fourth fan said: “I don’t often get annoyed by TV shows but the marking on #Strictly this year is so off. No way @TomFletcher should be bottom of the leaderboard. By far his best dance. Seems to be quite fixed for the judges’ favourites to stay.”

Strictly Come Dancing returns on Saturday 27 November at 6:55pm, with the results show on Sunday 28 November at 7:20pm on BBC One.
