Thomas Tuchel’s top priority clear after £85m Chelsea transfer revelation

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has built a side capable of competing for the Premier League crown, but did miss out on one of his top targets during the summer window, according to reports

Thomas Tuchel says Chelsea will make changes in League Cup

Thomas Tuchel has every right to be very happy with Chelsea’s summer transfer window.

After their stunning run to the Champions League crown, Tuchel proved the quality he already had within his ranks at Stamford Bridge.

However, the need for a striker was clear and in landing Romelu Lukaku, the Blues acquired one of the best in world football.

Lukaku’s impact has been immediate, scoring four goals in five games with Chelsea now very much in the title picture.

Saul Niguez could also be a shrewd option adding extra depth in midfield as they look to contend on all fronts including the Club World Cup later this year.

But there was one position transfer chief Marina Granovskaia failed to fill – and that was in central defence.

Chelsea’s long pursuit of Jules Kounde was a frustrating and ultimately unsuccessful one with the very public refusal from Sevilla unlikely to win too many admirers in west London.

However, even without a new arrival, the Blues have hardly struggled at the back, conceding just once in six games – a penalty against Liverpool.

Despite that excellent start, reports in France have suggested that Tuchel’s desperation for a central defender was very real.

RMC claim Paris Saint-Germain defender Marquinhos was the subject of transfer interest from Chelsea, with the European champions willing to pay £85million for his services.

A move for the Brazilian stalled with the player keen to stay in Paris, but the fact he was willing to fork out a huge fee shows his willingness to improve his options at the back.

Tuchel has spoken in glowing terms about Marquinhos, who he worked with during his time at the Parc des Princes.

Tuchel is a huge fan of PSG defender Marquinhos

In October of last year, the German described the defender as “the heart and soul” of the team, whilst also hinting he could do a job in midfield.

He said: “Marquinhos is the heart and soul of our team. That’s why he must play at the heart of the action, but also because he’s talented.

“He has all the qualities to play in midfield, and has a worker’s mentality. He can help the defenders and the forwards at the same time. It’s important that he’s close to everybody as he’s the boss.

“Marqui covers more ground than anybody else in the team and is valuable in the counter-pressing.

“If ‘Marqui’ needs to play at the back, then he will, but he has proven his ability in midfield,” Tuchel added. “He can really push the team to its best level.”

Reports have recently claimed that Chelsea are keen to hand Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger new deals, but if this window is anything to go by, that doesn’t rule out a move for a player Tuchel rates so highly.
