Tom Fletcher was originally in Busted but was booted out after just 24 hours

McFly star Tom Fletcher, who is getting his dancing shoes on for Strictly Come Dancing, claimed he was in the band for “for approximately 24 hours” but was kicked out so that another member could stay

Few people know that Tom Fletcher was actually a member of the original Busted line-up.

Tom is ‘Obviously’ known for being in fellow boyband McFly, but things could have been very different if their record producers hadn’t made a last minute decision.

The singer, who has joined the cast of Strictly Come Dancing this year, was at the same audition as Busted star Charlie Simpson and was under the belief he was in the band “for approximately 24 hours”.

However, the record label changed their minds and controversial decided that they only wanted three members instead of four.

Explaining what happened on The Jonathan Ross Show in 2014, Tom explained: “I got told I was in then a couple of days later on Halloween I got a call from a manager saying they’re going to stick with the three of them.”

Poor Tom was booted out so Charlie Simpson could stay, but he did stick around to write songs for Busted and formed a close writing relationship with James Bourne.

Eventually he teamed up with Danny Jones, but when Busted writing projects dried up the pair decided to form their own band.

Named after Marty McFly from the Back to the Future series, the boyband formed in 2003 and quickly rose to fame with hits such as It’s All About You and Five Colours in Her Hair

They became the youngest band ever to have an album debut at number one – taking the title from the Beatles with Room on the 3rd Floor.

Consisting of Tom Fletcher, Danny Jones, Dougie Poynter and Harry Judd, the lads banged out seven UK number one singles and even started their own record label, Super Records.

Tom has written or co-written 10 UK number one singles, including Crashed the Wedding, Who’s David and Thunderbirds for Busted and Five Colours In Her Hair, Star Girl and Obviously for McFly.

Aside from music, Tom wrote two children’s books with bandmate Danny and realised his own solo books The Christmasaurus and The Christmasaurus and the Winter Witch.

McFly have also dipped their toes into acting, appearing in an episode of Casualty in 2005, the comedy film Just My Luck with Lindsay Lohan in 2006 and Doctor Who the year after that.

Tom Fletcher confirmed he will juggle Strictly with touring with McFly

They even joined forces with Busted, who helped launch them in 2004 by inviting them on their tour, forming the mighty super group McBusted with Matt Willis and James Bourne 10 years later.

Tom actually went to the same school as Busted star Matt Willis, but their fellow bandmates claimed he didn’t like the McFly singer at the time.

“It’s not that I didn’t like Tom,” explained Matt in 2014. “It’s just we were very different people. Although we’re probably the most alike now.”

The McBusted supergroup had great success but the good times did not last.

Harry admitted their personal relationships were “in the worst place they had been in the entire 13 years we’d known each other” when the supergroup disbanded in 2015.

He claimed there was an “unspoken jealousy”, while Dougie confessed cracks appeared and “caused resentment”.

Then came the dark days as the band went on hiatus from 2016 and eventually confirmed they were focusing on solo projects in 2018.

Thankfully their time apart didn’t last long as they reformed in 2019, announced an album with previously unreleased material.

The lads were due to go on a big arena tour last year but unfortunately they were forced to postpone it three times due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Now Tom will balance Strictly training with his band’s Young Dumb Thrills tour – with the pre-recorded launch night episode airing at the same time as their London date.

Tom recently took to his Instagram stories to clear up any concern over him not attending the tour and insisted he would be doing both at the same time.

He explained: “I’ve been getting messages asking about the tour, because Strictly is at the same time.

“Some of you were concerned that I wasn’t gonna be doing the McFly tour. I am of course 100 percent doing the McFly tour.

“I’m training for Strictly at the same time. So I am training in the day, McFlying in the night.”

Joking he’d be needing to drink a lot more coffees for the juggling act, he said: “Busy times but all fun.

“So there you go, I will be doing the tour, I will be dancing my way through the McFly tour.”
