Thomas Tuchel confessed Chelsea deserved to be beaten by Manchester City as he accepted the blame for his side not playing their “best game”.

The Blues squandered the chance to cement their place at the top of the Premier League with a 1-0 defeat by City on Saturday afternoon.

Gabriel Jesus scored the winner early in the second half, which was no less than the champions deserved for their dominant performance at Stamford Bridge.

Tuchel offered a bleak verdict on Chelsea’s display, admitting they were overpowered in almost all areas of the pitch while scarcely breaking out of City’s intense pressing.

Gabriel Jesus scored the decisive goal as Chelsea lost at home to Manchester City

“We lost the game and I think City deserved to win,” said the Blues boss. “I think for 60 minutes or until the goal, we were very strong in the last 20 metres of the field and only there.

“There were 80 metres were we were not good enough and could not escape the pressure.

“To have ball possession but not only ball possession to switch play and hurt them and to grow in confidence, this never happened in the first half.

“We conceded – until then we defended well the box and the goal excellent but that was the only part of the match.

“The performance was not complex enough it was simply not at our very best level and you need to be at your very best level to push a game like this to your side.

“After the goal it felt more like that the belief in winning is bigger than the fearing of losing something.

“I don’t know why and we tried to push and got the crowd behind us, City got a bit tired and we could create more situations around the box.

“[We were] Never on our highest level and that’s why you cannot expect to get a result. It’s always possible to turn things around and to have one delivery and header to get an equaliser. We can accept because it’s not our best game.”

The 1-0 loss marks Tuchel’s first defeat by Guardiola since he took over as Chelsea boss, with the German winning the three previous matches.

Tuchel expects a lack of “freshness” had some part to play, adding: “I did not think that if we play long balls we believed in it.

“It was doubtful and we were a little bit protecting something, it felt like there was something to lose but we had a lot to win. [It] can happen.

“We lacked a bit of freshness also. NG [N’Golo Kante] ill since some days and I decided to let him start, Jorginho had some problems, Thiago [Silva] could not start. Maybe this is on me, not the very best choices.”
