Wright explains “frightening” Greenwood prospect after Ferguson chat

Mason Greenwood has been joined in the Man Utd attack by Cristiano Ronaldo which could be hugely beneficially for the youngser, who has been tipped for great things by Sir Alex Ferguson

Solskjaer delighted with Greenwood’s development over summer

Ian Wright insists it is “frightening” to think what Mason Greenwood could accomplish if he learns off Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Manchester United youngster came through the club’s academy and has long been tipped for big things.

Greenwood has scored in each of his side’s three games so far this term and will now be joined by Ronaldo.

The Portuguese star has returned to Old Trafford at the age of 36 having furthered his career in Spain and Italy.

Sir Alex Ferguson has hailed Greenwood as one of the best products to come through the United academy.

And Wright believes the combination of his talent and the potential to learn from Ronaldo, a five-time Ballon d’Or winner, is an incredible prospect.

He told Premier League Productions: “The only thing I can equate Ronaldo’s return to is just knowing that Dennis Bergkamp was coming for us at Arsenal and how that changed us.

“I cannot even get into the realms of thinking what that is going to do for their academy players, especially someone like Greenwood.

“He can just watch now. Cristiano Ronaldo will probably want to impart and tell him what he needs to do.

“I was speaking to Sir Alex the other day, we were playing golf and he mentioned about Mason Greenwood being one of the best they’ve ever had out of their academy.

“Now you put one of the best players that’s ever played for the football club, he’s come back as a world icon to play with him and alongside him it’s frightening what this guy could turn into.

“The mentality of him rubbing off on people could be the difference for Manchester United.”

Ronaldo has already spoken about his desire to help United’s young stars.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has continued to back youth during his tenure with the likes of Anthony Elanga and Shola Shoretire both given opportunities last season.

“The new players, the young lads, I think they have huge potential. This is a new time, a new generation, and I’m here to help them win,” said the Portuguese star.

“I’m feeling good. People think I’ve come back here from the heart, blah, blah, blah, but I’m coming to show I’m still capable, to smash it and do my best and show that.”

Greenwood, who was left out of the recent England squad, could feature alongside Ronaldo in Saturday’s clash with Newcastle.

Jadon Sancho could also start for the first time at Old Trafford.
