Aston Villa continue to be linked with a move for River Plate winger Julian Alvarez.
Alvarez has been in fine form for River this season, scoring seven times and registering four assists in 11 matches.
He was tipped to move to Villa in the summer but stayed in Argentina and has begun the season in fine form.
The 21 year-old has scored five times in his last four matches and has also set up three goals for his team-mates.
Alvarez hit the headlines in Argentina when he scored twice in a Superclasico defeat of Boca Juniors, the first a superb strike from range.
He extended his contract in June last year to keep him at River until the end of 2022, and it has been reported in the Argentinian press that any club who wanted to buy the player in the summer would have had to have forked out around £21 million.
Italian media outlet Calciomercato are claiming that interest is hotting up in Alvarez after his fine start to the season.
AC Milan are being linked with the player while German giants Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund are also credited with an interest.
Villa and their Premier League rivals are also name-checked, as is Spanish side Sevilla.
It is unlikely at this stage that Villa will look to strengthen their ranks in attack having spent big in the summer on Leon Bailey, Danny Ings and Emiliano Buendia from Leverkusen, Southampton and Norwich City respectively.
Alvarez, a compatriot of Buendia and his Villa team-mate Emiliano Martinez, would have a high re-sale value and be able to develop under Smith.
It’s one to watch and with the player’s contract expiring in 14 months River could look to sell their asset to avoid losing him on a free transfer or for a fee vastly lower than his value.
