Aston Villa transfers as Smith addresses January links

The January transfer window is creeping ever closer as clubs step up their preparations for the winter window.

That will be no different at Aston Villa as new head coach Steven Gerrard can look to put his stamp on the squad.

Villa have already been linked with a number of players, despite there still being over a month until moves can officially be completed.

Here’s the latest transfer news and rumours from in and around Villa Park.

Transfer confirmed

Aston Villa have completed the signing of youngster Thierry Katsukunya from Coventry City.

The 16-year-old arrives at Villa Park for a ‘significant’ fee with the club continuing to add to their academy teams following the signing of Louie Barry, Tim Iroegnunam and Declan Frith.

Coventry City have confirmed the news with the club’s chief executive Dave Boddy explaining why the move was made.

“While we did not want to sell him, it is an opportunity for Thierry to continue his development at Aston Villa’s Academy and we have ensured a significant fee has been received both now and potentially in the future for the Football Club,” he said.

Smith answers transfer question

Former boss Dean Smith has taken questions over potential summer transfers amid links to some of his old Villa players.

Smith was appointed as manager of relegation-threatened Norwich City over the international break, just one week after leaving Aston Villa.

He won his first game in charge of the Canaries last week, coming out as 2-1 winners over Southampton.

It’s perhaps no surprise that the former boss has been linked with an interest in players such as Keinan Davis and Conor Hourihane.

He has however, poured cold water on that speculation.

“I’ve got 23 outfield players at Norwich at the moment and I’m getting to know them so I’m not looking any further ahead of that,” he said.
