Behind EastEnder’s transformation before I’m A Celeb

The Ian Beale, viewers are seeing on I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here, is not the Ian Beale they remember.

Adam, 53, has played the character of Ian Beale since 1985 – making him the programme’s longest-serving cast member.

And it is fair to say that his character did not age well over the years – more well known for his buddha like beer belly, the curse of many middle-aged men.

However, upon entering the Gwrych castle – where I’m A Celeb is now set – the actor looked like he has aged like fine wine.

Not quite George Clooney but the soap star is dramatically slimmer and sporting new look facial hair that makes him almost unrecognisable from his baby faced on-screen alter ego – who was last seen on Albert Square in January.

It appears the soap legend is having the last laugh, after previously revealing he had been trolled about his weight issues.

Since filming his last scenes on EastEnders in January after announcing he was talking “an extended break” – Adam has been on a healthy eating and exercise regime, reports The Mirror.

He is said to practice mindful eating – choosing healthier options at mealtime such as lean meats including grilled chicken and fish.

The soap legend has also cut down on alcohol and sugary treats.

Adam now takes regular exercise such as cycling and fishing – something he must have more time for – now he’s no longer working to EastEnders’ often arduous filming schedules.

On Instagram where the actor has posted pics of his new look active lifestyle, Adam credited former castmate Jake Wood for his weight loss.
Jake played Max Branning on the soap and underwent his own image overhaul when he appeared on Strictly back in 2014.

Adam told his followers: “Like my mate Mr Wood says, ‘you got to get out there. You got to do it.’ He goes running and I go cycling.”

In an interview with Daily Mirror, Adam revealed how he had been trolled about his weight over the years and that one fan even called him fat to his face.

Adam recalled: “One of the best examples of somebody being rude is when we were at the BBC Good Food show. This woman looks at me and says, ‘You’re fatter than you are on telly.’”

Ian Beale left Albert Square in early 2021 after a turbulent few weeks during which he married his childhood friend Sharon who then tried to kill him.

Off screen Adam has endured some personal drama getting used to single life – after splitting from his wife of 22 years Beverley.

The actor announced in a statement in August 2020 that they had split.

The couple share two children Jessica, 28, and son Samuel, 24.

A spokesperson for Adam said at the time :” Beverley and Adam separated in August last year and we ask that the family’s privacy is respected”
