Ben Foster waxes lyrical about Villa’s summer transfer window

Watford goalkeeper Ben Foster has praised Villa for their summer transfer activity, picking out three arrivals in particular for praise.

Dean Smith bought a total of five new players to the club this summer with Emiliano Buendia, Ashley Young, Danny Ings and Leon Bailey all arriving at Villa Park.

The window also saw Jack Grealish complete a move away from the club, joining Manchester City in a £100 million deal – a record fee in British football.

Despite that loss, Foster is full of praise for both the business done by Villa and also the way they’ve gone about it this summer.

“They have had a very, very good window, obviously, losing somebody like Jack Grealish is a big hit, it’s a big blow, he was their main man, the captain, the talisman,” he told his The Cycling Goalkeeper Youtube channel .

“But the players they’ve got in, I think, have been very, very good business.

“Emi Buendia, £30m from Norwich, I like that signing a lot, he’s a good player. I played against him last season, he’s a baller, he scored at the weekend, you know what you’re going to get with him, I like him.

“Danny Ings, though, for me, is the big one. Danny Ings, what a signing, what an absolute signing. I think it was about £30m, but you know the beauty of it is Aston Villa just seem to have done their business as ‘bang, get it done’.

“You didn’t even hear a rumour that Danny Ings was going to sign, he might possibly be on his way to this, or a medical, it was just done, they announced it, signed, sealed, thank you very much.

“Everybody else just sat back and went, ‘how have they managed to do that’.

“He’s still got three or four years of absolute goals every season, guaranteed.

“A guarantee for goal, did you see his overhead kick the other week? A thing of beauty, but that’s Danny Ings all over, he’s instinctive, he’s that fox in the box. He just knows where to be at the right time, and that’s what you’re going to get from Danny Ings, as long as he stays fit, he’s guaranteed to score you goals.”

Foster also picked out the signing of former teammate Ashley Young, who arrived at the club on a free transfer after his release from Inter Milan at the end of last season.

“Ashley Young, experience, and he’s the kind of player that he will offer you so much on the pitch because he’s still a player, but in the dressing room, just keeping the standards high day in, day out, he will be that guy,” Foster added.

“He’ll be like that chairman in the dressing room, making sure that ship is running tight and players like him, for me are worth their weight in gold. A brilliant, brilliant signing.”
