Christian Purslow gives ‘perfect’ update for 20,000 Aston Villa fans

Aston Villa CEO Christian Purslow has updated fans about the club’s plans to expand Villa Park.

There are currently 20,000 Villa supporters on the waiting list for a season ticket, a figure which Purslow says has created the “perfect backdrop” for plans to proceed.

As well as capacity, Purslow says there are also intentions to improve the club’s hospitality and commercial offerings in the coming months and years.

An application for planning permission is due soon, meaning plans Villa fans have been dreaming of for many years are finally close to becoming a reality.

The expansion of Villa Park is long overdue in the eyes of many, with talk of improvements spanning decades.

“We are making really good progress now on developing I would say the preliminary designs and a vision for how to do three things in respect of Villa Park,” Purslow said in an interview with the club.

“The first is to try and increase capacity and that is because we have 20,000 fans now on our waiting list for season ticket, which is an absolutely remarkable figure. It’s constantly growing. I thank all our fans for taking the trouble to sign up to that scheme.

“Obviously we sold out our 29,000 allocation this season in, I think, a couple of days. So the fact that 20,000 people can’t get season tickets when they want them is a perfect backdrop to try and increase the size of our stadium.

“A good chunk of those people would like to have hospitality rather than pure general admission tickets, so the second element of improving and redeveloping Villa Park is to find ways to grow the component of our capacity where we provide hospitality.

“And then the third element is to transform our commercial space, whether that’s a substantially improved retail operation or other aspects of match day and no match day commercial operations.

“Those three elements; capacity, hospitality, commercial activities, form part of our vision for redevelopment of Villa Park. We’re making good progress, I’m hoping to be able to apply for planning consent in the next month or so for some or all of those ideas.”
