Aston Villa legend and all-time leading goalscorer Gabriel Agbonlahor has urged Carney Chukwuemeka to reject a move to Liverpool, in favour of signing a new contract at the club.
Speaking to Football Insider, Agbonlahor stated: “My message to him would be, Aston Villa is the best place for you to be. You might have clubs like Man City and Man United looking at you but you’ve got more chance of breaking through at Aston Villa and get minutes.
“If I was him I’d keep with it, keep performing for the Under-23s, keep performing in training with Steven Gerrard.
“He will get his chance and you’ve got to be patient. Look at Jacob Ramsey, he got his chance.
“When you get your chance take it. My advice would be to reject offers from Liverpool and everyone else, stay and sign a new contract with the club.
“He’s still young. All you need is that one game, make it count and you’ll stay in the team.”
It has recently been reported that Chukwuemeka will not be signing a new contract at the club.
Steven Gerrard has commented on the situation and stated: “We believe this is the right place for him. If anyone else thinks it’s not then I would like to sit in front of them and discuss it. We don’t see a problem. He’s got 18 months left on his deal. We need to let the kid play football.”
The 18-year-old midfielder recently made an appearance as a substitute versus Manchester City, where he had a golden opportunity to score his first senior goal but saw his effort saved by Ederson.
Gerrard commented on his performance by saying: “We believe in him, we trust him. To call for him in the first place shows the courage and belief we’ve got in him.”
Villa face Leicester City tomorrow and Chukwuemeka will likely be involved for this tough home fixture. He has already started a Premier League game this season but faces competition from the likes of Morgan Sanson, Jacob Ramsey and Douglas Luiz for the third position in the midfield three.
