Ferdinand shares what Villa players love about Gerrard as Wesley tells all

Wesley reveals injury torment

Wesley Moraes has revealed how he “wept” for 20 days after suffering a serious knee injury while playing for Aston Villa.

The Brazilian forward sustained serious cruciate knee ligament damage following a tackle from Burnley’s Ben Mee in January 2020.

The injury was worse than first thought and he was ruled out for more than a year before returning for a training ground game against West Brom.

He then played his first competitive game for Villa in 480 days when he featured as a substitute in a 2-2 draw against Albion in April.

Wesley, a £22m signing from Club Brugge, is now back at the club which sold him to Villa and has spoken to Belgian outlet KW.BE about his injury nightmare.

Ferdinand shares Villa feeling on Gerrard

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand says there are really “good vibes” coming out of Aston Villa after revealing what he’s heard about the impact of new head coach Steven Gerrard.

Gerrard has led the claret and blue to back to back victories in his first two games in charge of the club, beating Brighton 2-0 and then following it up with a win at Crystal Palace at the weekend.

The former Liverpool captain has already won huge acclaim from the supporters about the way he has hit the ground running having been appointed after Dean Smith was axed after five straight defeats in the Premier League.

And now Ferdinand says he has learned from people within the game of Gerrard’s qualities and how training has been given an extra edge at Villa.

“I’m hearing some really good, good vibes that are coming out of Villa, the way that they’re training,” the former Leeds and Manchester United defender said on his VIBE with Five podcast on Monday.

Neville sends Villa message

Gary Neville insists Aston Villa ‘should be desperate’ for an independent regulator to be introduced in English football.

A fan-led review of English football by MP Tracey Crouch discovered numerous problems within the game and recommended that an independent regulator be appointed to avoid catastrophes like Bury going bust or another attempt to form a European Super League.

Villa chief executive Christian Purslow insists the so-called ‘Big Six’ wouldn’t dream of trying to join another breakaway league after the embarrassing 48-hour U-turn earlier this year.

Manchester United, Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur were all forced to leave the European Super League days after it was announced due to the backlash it received.

However, Purslow – who claims the Premier League will filter £1.6billion down the leagues to help fund EFL clubs – insists an independent regulator is not the answer.

Bielsa speaks out on Phillips after Villa bids

Leeds United head coach Marcelo Bielsa says Kalvin Phillips could have left the club to join Aston Villa after reassuring supporters he has no problem with the England midfielder.

Phillips was substituted at half-time of Leeds’ clash at Brighton at the weekend sparking rumours that the two were not seeing eye to eye.

But Bielsa has refuted suggestions there is a strained relationship between the pair and says the midfielder is regarded as an icon at Elland Road.

And he said the player could have left the Whites when Villa had tried to sign him in the summer of 2019 just weeks after they had secured promotion from the Championship to the Premier League.

“Kalvin Phillips is an idol for the Leeds United fans, he’s a popular property with a lot of affection and we all have the obligation to look after the feeling that unites a fan with a team,” Bielsa said.
