Gerrard relying on Young heavily at Villa

Ashley Young has recently made his 200th appearance for Aston Villa and recorded his 42 assists for the club, which is more than any other player has recorded in claret and blue.

Speaking in an interview on Villa TV, Young had this to say: “Obviously it’s a proud time for me, being back at the club.

“I enjoyed my time here before and I am delighted to be back and enjoying my time again. To get my 200 th appearance is a major feat for me, I am delighted to have made it and hopefully a lot more to come.

“Age is nothing but a number. There were question marks if I was going to be able to play at the level that the Premier League demands but I feel like I’ve slipped straight back into where I left off. I feel fitter than when I was younger, you know how to keep yourself fit and ready for every game.

“The club is going in the right direction, the owners are putting money in to get the club back where I said the club should be, back in Europe. I do believe that us a club are one of the top six clubs and can be pushing for top four.”

Young went on to comment about becoming the clubs leader for assists and stated: “That’s a massive achievement and proud moment for me to make history coming back here. It’s unbelievable. I was aware of it after the game, Austin MacPhee told me about it and it’s nice to win the game but to make history as well made it even better.

“I’ve always known what my ability is about and what I can bring to a team. I’ve always said I like playing higher up and in the last few games I’ve been given that chance. I’m a versatile player that can play in many different positions, in training the manager said there’s probably five positions that you need to keep an eye out for and make sure you know the understanding of that position to be ready to play there.”

Young has so far played as a left-back, midfielder and a winger this season and with Matt Targett going off due to a head injury versus Manchester City, he could be set to prove how versatile he is once again against Leicester City.

When talking about Young, Steven Gerrard had this to say: “If any one of our players picked all our information up really well and applied themselves to it, it is Ashley Young. I expect nothing else, I’ve played with Ashley, I know what his standards are and his levels but he deserved the start today. He has showed fantastic leadership, not just in games but around the training ground, in terms of his standards. He has a big part to play, he has been perfect for me and the group of staff.”
