Grealish on Villa departure as Liverpool’s Jones tipped for Jan move

Welcome to your morning round-up of all the latest Aston Villa news on Friday, September 3, 2021.

The transfer window closed on Wednesday as Villa ended their summer business relatively quietly in terms of incomings, but with several outgoings. Villa have trimmed their squad and handed youth players the opportunity to gain invaluable first-team experience elsewhere.

Head coach Dean Smith can now fully focus on matters on the pitch ahead of kick-starting Villa’s 2021/22 Premier League season in the coming weeks following the international break.

Grealish opens up on Villa exit

Jack Grealish became the most expensive British footballer in history when he left Aston Villa for Manchester City over the summer.

City paid Villa a Premier League record transfer fee of £100million to land Grealish ahead of the 2021/22 season.

Despite only signing a new bumper five contract at his boyhood club last year, the 25-year-old left Villa Park in search of Champions League football, and a move that would allow him to compete for major honours immediately.

In an interview with ITV Sport ahead of England’s 2022 World Cup qualifier against Hungary last tonight, Grealish revealed why there was a £100million release clause inserted in his contract.

Villa tipped to move for Liverpool star

Aston Villa have been backed to make a move for Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones when the transfer window reopens in January.

Jones was mentioned as a transfer target in the latter stages of the summer window, which shut at 11pm on Tuesday.

The Sun reported that Villa are keen on the 20 year-old, who has risen through the ranks at Liverpool.

Jones introduced himself to Reds fans and the world stage when he scored the winner in an FA Cup Merseyside derby in January last year.

The boyhood Reds fan curled in a superb effort off the underside of the crossbar to score the only goal of the game.

Free agents Villa could still sign

Aston Villa concluded their summer transfer business with five new players.

Emiliano Buendia was the headline signing, the Argentine arriving from Norwich City for a club-record £33 million.

Meanwhile Danny Ings, Leon Bailey and Ashley Young arrived to mitigate the departure of Jack Grealish to Manchester City for £100m and Axel Tuanzebe replaced Bjorn Engels.

Those are the players Villa signed from other clubs and the transfer window shut for the summer on Tuesday at 11pm but free agents who left their respective teams before the deadline earlier this week can sign for other clubs.

Villa were heavily linked with midfielders before the transfer window closed, James Ward-Prowse and Harry Winks of Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur two of the names touted with moves to the Second City.

Chelsea’s injury problems ahead of Villa clash

Aston Villa are back in action when they travel to Chelsea on Saturday week.

The Blues host Dean Smith ‘s side at Stamford Bridge with Villa looking to kick on after a start to the Premier League that has seen them record a win, loss and draw from their opening three matches.

Chelsea, meanwhile, are gunning for the Premier League title this season having won the Champions League last season and have begun their season in good form.

They have conceded only one goal across their three matches beating Crystal Palace, Arsenal and drawing at Liverpool.

Thomas Tuchel’s side have suffered an injury blow to midfielder N’Golo Kante, who withdrew from the France squad for their World Cup qualifiers over the next week, ahead of the Villa game.
