Ilkay Gundogan warns Jack Grealish over Man City playing time

Jack Grealish has been warned that he cannot expect to come back from injury and go straight into Manchester City’s starting lineup.

Grealish ‘s own team-mate, Ilkay Gundogan, has said that players returning from injury – as the former Aston Villa captain is – will not walk straight back into the team.

Kevin De Bruyne and Phil Foden are on the sidelines with Grealish, who has been out with a knock picked up while on international duty with England earlier this month.

Grealish, though, had not started against Burnley on October 16 but came back into the side for two games only to be benched again for the 2-0 win at Manchester United.

He had not played since and could miss the reunion with Villa, who sold him to City for £100 million in the summer.

Gundogan, meanwhile, has said that City’s returning stars may have to be content with a role outside of Pep Guardiola’s first team.

“It just shows we have a lot of quality and that there are a lot more things to come from us. Of course the challenge, the rivalry between those players is always a benefit for the team,” Gundogan said after his side’s 2-0 defeat of West Ham United on Sunday.

“Everyone knows they have to be at their best to get into the first XI and also when everyone is fit, you have to accept that you might have to sit on the bench as other players are there who have the quality to play.

“If they train well every single day on the training pitch, that’s also crucial. So we just don’t need 11 great players on the pitch. We also need the great ones who sometimes need to be outside.

“It’s not always easy to accept that role but it’s crucial to win the biggest games and titles.”

Guardiola said that Grealish was making good progress ahead of the match with West Ham with the player training by himself in a bid to return to fitness.

“We will not take risks, but hopefully they will come back soon,” Guardiola said of his injured players.
