Jack Grealish responds to Aston Villa fans after Man City return

Former Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish returned to Villa Park for the first time since his £100 million move to Manchester City in August on Wednesday night.

Grealish came off the substitute’s bench to help City to ward off a Villa fightback after Ruben Dias and Bernardo Silva had put the visitors in front with two quality goals.

Centre-back Dias swept home from range after latching on to Raheem Sterling’s cut-back with 27 minutes gone and Bernardo volleyed home in style two minutes before half-time to put City in control.

But Villa did not go under and fired back through Ollie Watkins as Steven Gerrard’s side put in a battling display in his third game in charge to run the reigning Premier League champions close.

It was an emotional night for all concerned with Grealish back in B6 in opposition colours but only as a sub to begin with.

He came off the bench with three minutes to go and while some fans made their feelings known about his decision to leave for City there were smatterings of applause when he came on.

Grealish also made a point of acknowledging the supporters after the game.

“Great performance and an important 3 points,” the Solihull-born boyhood Villa fan wrote on social media. “Thank you so much for the great reception at Villa Park, it was brilliant to be back.”

Villa did well to hold their own against City and not be distracted by the sideshow of Grealish’s return.

They have now conceded only three times in three games under Gerrard since he replaced Dean Smith last month, winning two matches.

“In terms of the second half I thought we were outstanding. We scared City because we were so close to taking something from the game,” Gerrard said.

“It was a terrific reaction from the players and I told them not to leave this stadium with their heads down at all.”
