Klopp has already detailed his plan for Villa target Joe Gomez

Aston Villa have been linked with a January move for Liverpool defender Joe Gomez.

Gomez, 24, has only featured seven times under Jurgen Klopp at Anfield this term since returning from a long-term injury.

The England international has fallen behind Joel Matip and Liverpool’s £36million summer signing Ibrahima Konate in the pecking order to partner Virgil van Dijk.

And Villa – who are now managed by Anfield icon Steven Gerrard – has been mooted as a potential loan destination for Gomez in the second half of the season.

The Mirror claims Gerrard will look into a loan move for Gomez once the January transfer window opens.

The new Villa boss will be backed in the next two transfer windows by owners Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens as he looks to reshape the squad left behind by Dean Smith.

Speaking about Gomez’s lack of playing time at the end of October, Liverpool manager Klopp insisted the defender will get his chance to impress in the Reds’ hectic schedule.

“All five of the boys get on really well with each other, which is really nice to see,” said Klopp. “They respect each other a lot.

“We will need them, and we will need Joe, and Joe’s quality is incredible, we all know that.”

Klopp continued: “Joe didn’t play much yet (this season), but that’s how it is. After the long injury we decided to start with Joel, which made absolute sense. Now Ibou came in.

“We have to deal with Joey, at the beginning still we are dealing with intensity and stuff like this.

“We are not even halfway through the season and people are already talking about these kind of things. Hopefully nobody gets injured through the year.

“But that’s a footballer’s life. You have to be on top of your game for the moment when you come in, and in that moment you have to convince everybody. That’s how it is.”

Villa have four central defenders in captain Tyrone Mings, Ezri Konsa, Kortney Hause and Axel Tuanzbee, whose loan deal from Manchester United expires at the end of the campaign.

Gerrard has reportedly already identified left-back as an area which needs strengthening, while new centre-backs and midfielders continue to be linked with Villa.
