Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez continues to shine on the international stage.
Martinez forced his way into Argentina’s number one jersey on the back of a fine debut season for Villa following his transfer from Arsenal last year.
The 29 year-old helped Argentina to Copa America glory in the summer and attention is firmly focused on qualifying for the World Cup in Qatar next year.
He helped keep Uruguay at bay on Sunday night in a 3-0 win for his side with Lionel Messi, Rodrigo de Paul and Lautaro Martinez on the scoresheet for Argentina.
The game was far from as simple as the scoreline may suggest, though, and Argentina had Martinez to thank for that.
He saved well from Luis Suarez in the 21st minute when the Atletico Madrid striker volleyed back across Martinez, the Villa goalkeeper keeping him at bay with an out-stretched right hand.
Suarez went close twice with Martinez, a commanding presence in Argentina’s goal, foiling the usually deadly marksman.
Little wonder, then, that Messi singled out Martinez for praise after the game and not for the first time.
On Martinez, Messi said: “Fundamental. When the pressure is on he always responds.
“He did it again today. We have one of the best goalkeepers in the world and we are making the most of it.”
“Uruguay had clear opportunities to score even though we were in control. That’s the sort of team they are. They can create danger out of nothing.”
There is a real case for Martinez to be talked about among the best in his position in world football.
Villa fans have also had their say on the stopper and agree with Messi.

“Martinez was arguably the best keeper in the Premier League last season,” one said while another added: “He is the best goalkeeper in the world in my book.”
“He is the best goalkeeper in the world, no question,” a third fan said.
“I would not swap Martinez for any goalkeeper in world football, nobody is better,” another Villa supporter added.
