Simon Jordan shares why he ‘really likes Aston Villa’

Former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan has revealed he has a soft spot for Aston Villa, a club which are ‘in a great place right now’, according to the talkSPORT pundit.

He thinks Villa are well-placed to propel themselves into the elite of English football in the coming years.

Villa, in their third season back in the Premier League, are looking to qualify for European football as the club’s owners try to continue their upward trajectory.

Since Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens came took over from Tony Xia in 2018, Villa have seen nothing but success, first achieving promotion out of the Championship, then surviving the top-flight drop in 2020 before going close to qualifying for European football last season.

Only Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea have spent more money on transfer fees since Villa’s return to the Premier League in 2019, and pundit Jordan is pleased with the club’s recent progress.

“Villa are in a great place right now, that they haven’t been previously,” he told talkSPORT.

“They’re a great football club, I really like the Villa. I grew up watching Villa with the Gary Shaws of the world and the Dennis Mortimers and the Peter Withes winning the European Cup in 1982.

“And I really liked ‘Deadly’ Doug [Ellis, the former club owner]. Nobody thought I would because we were a clash of cultures, but he was so kind to me when we played Villa.

“And I like that the club has a huge stature and the Midlands is a huge footballing hotbed, so while it’s travelled through a very difficult period – I mean two or three years ago they were in a bit of a state – but where they are now is chalk and cheese.”
