Supermarket giant submits plan to relocate Wishaw store

One of Britain’s biggest supermarkets could be set to relocate its store in Wishaw to another part of the town.

A planning application has been submitted by Lidl to demolish existing buildings on the land at Heathery Road and construct a new supermarket along with car parking for 112 spaces and associated landscaping.

And that would mean a move out of the existing Roberts Street site, which has been a fixture in the town centre for a number of years.

The company’s planning and retail statement, submitted to North Lanarkshire Council’s planning department, states: “The proposal comprises a brownfield site and will provide a discount foodstore for the residents in the area.

“The proposal will improve customer choice and enhance the shopping experience for shoppers in Wishaw.

“The proposed building will provide a clean and contemporary design that will be complimentary to the visual character of the surrounding area.

“There will be a positive economic impact as a result of new employment.”

The report also states at a typical Lidl store, around 40 full-time or part-time jobs would be created, which would be an uplift on the existing store.

Last summer, North Lanarkshire Council published a draft regeneration strategy.

The draft vision document proposes a series of conceptual masterplans for the regeneration of Wishaw town centre.

The masterplans indicate that the existing store site can potentially be regenerated for residential uses.

Currently, timelines outline that an action plan for Wishaw will be adopted by 2023 with phase one of residential infill development taking place from 2022 onwards.

The report continues: “We conclude that the application proposal will not have a significant adverse impact on the vitality or viability of Wishaw town centre.

“Similarly the proposed development will support and not adversely affect the outcomes of any future action plans being brought forward in Wishaw.

“It is considered that there is ample capacity – in terms of available expenditure – to accommodate the proposed Lidl foodstore.

“The proposal will maintain the range and choice of retail offer in the surrounding area by bringing up to date discount convenient floorspace to the locality.”
