Renfrewshire Live understands the teenager was walking her dog when the accident happened.

Witnesses say the pet was killed instantly.

An eye-witness has told: “The girl had a dog with her and it was struck first taking the impact.

“I think she’s only had the little pug for a matter of months.

“It suffered a broken neck and died at the scene.

“The girl was relatively new to the area.

“On the scene was an ambulance and a first-responder.”

A Johnstone man who lives nearby where the incident took place has told how the road was “an accident waiting to happen.”

He said: “For a start, there’s no pavement, so straight away, it’s dangerous for people, and last night was freezing and dark.

“This is a busy road with cars, especially at night when it’s quiet.

“Not so long ago the council put in a cycle lane on part of the road and everyone said it was an accident waiting to happen.

“Now this poor girl is in hospital after being hit on the road, it’s absolutely shocking.

“The crash has been a really tragic event for the town, especially at this time of year, it’s really sad.

“We were in the house at the time but the road was shut for hours, well into the morning.

“I hope that the young lass makes a speedy recovery.”

The driver of the Audi was uninjured.

Police Scotland confirmed the road remained closed for several hours to allow collision investigators to examine the scene.

A 23-year-old man was arrested but has since been released, pending further enquiries.

Sergeant Alan Cook said: “I am appealing to people and motorist who were in the area around the time of the incident to contact us. In particular, if you have a dash cam device, please check the footage as it could provide vital information for our investigation.”

Anyone with information is asked to call Road Policing officers via 101, quoting incident number 3399 of 28 November, 2021.
